BRICS Youth Summit

Our Managing Director, Ms Noluthando was invited by the National Youth Development Agency to the 9th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Youth Summit held in Durban South Africa between 18 and 20 July 2023. The theme for the Summit was “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism.”

 

The objectives of the summit were to bring together youth participants, affording them an opportunity to share ideas and work on a concrete action plan for co-operation in economic, humanitarian, mass media and science sphere.

 

Ms. Zulu sat on a panel discussion titled; “Developing a partnership towards an equitable Just Transition,” alongside; Mr. Yershen Pillay (Chief Executive Officer: CHIETA), Mr. Rudi Dicks (Deputy Director General: Private Office of President) and Ms. Gcobisa Magazi (Director: Office of the Deputy Director General: Public Finance and Lead Coordinator on Climate Change, National Treasury).

 

The discussion centered around the need for energy security and the importance of a Just Transition that benefits all. Ms. Zulu was quoted stating that, “all human beings must have access to affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity.”

SAYEC Energy Summit

On 4 January 2022, Our Managing Director, Ms. Noluthando Zulu was invited to participate in the inaugural South African Youth Economic Council Energy Summit. The purpose of the Summit was to unpack the key themes and outcomes of COP26 namely the signing pf the Glasgow Climate Pact and agreeing the Paris Rulebook. The Summit also aimed to center the discussion of the Just Energy Transition in South Africa around the Youth and Job Creation.

The Summit was addressed by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy followed by a panel discussion, where Ms. Zulu was a participant. On stage Ms. Zulu was joined by, The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy; Mr. Gwede Mantashe, the CEO of Seriti Resources; Mr. Mike Teke and the CEO of Menar Mr. Vustlat Bayoglu.

The discussion focused on the importance of the Just Energy Transition in South Africa while balancing the need to grow the economy using coal and the use of new energy sources. Ms. Zulu highlighted the importance of the need of South Africa to gradually move away from coal taking into consideration the potential impacts on coal mining communities and employees. Ms. Zulu also highlighted the opportunities of the Just Energy Transition, namely, the mining of green metals contained in South Africa and the jobs this could create and the opportunities to invest in new technology and new skills for the youth.

BLACK BUSINESS COUNCIL ANNUAL SUMMIT

On 29 June 2023, Dwala Mining’s Managing Director moderated a panel at the Black Business Council Annual Summit, discussing Energy Security/Sovereignty and the Just Transition. Panelists included; CEO of Seriti Resources, Mr. Mike Teke, Commissioner of the Presidential Climate Commission, Ms. Shamini Harrington and Co-founder and Managing Director of RUBK, Ms. Ruse Moleshe.

Ms. Zulu opened the session with an opening talking to the importance of energy for an economy, stating, “Energy is such a necessary element in development that it should be seen as a basic right.” Questions posed to the panelists included; “What is the impact of current geopolitical developments on global energy needs? Are we seeing the extension of the life of coal as a result? Are we seeing coal mining companies change their strategy when it comes to JET?”, “There is great interest in South Africa for its green commodities.

We are the largest host country for a commodity which is key for green hydrogen. When it comes to renewable energy which parts of the value chain one needs to focus on for localisation…what are the low hanging fruits looking at South Africa’s current capabilities where we can expand in scale. What capabilities can we export to the rest of the world?” and “How does Eskom plan to diversify its sources of energy over the longer term to become carbon neutral?”

Ms. Zulu closed off the session with the following statement, “It would be an act of injustice to future generations if this generation does not exploit opportunities that lie within the renewable energy sector to deal with our fundamental socioeconomic challenges such an unemployment and inequity over and above energy security.” 

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP CONVENTION

Dwala Mining wins Best Performance in the Seriti ESD Programme
Dwala Mining participated in Seriti’s Enterprise and Supplier Development programme for the year 2023. Ran by Zevoli Growth Partners the programme is a part of Seriti’s community development initiatives to stimulate the local SMME sector in order to address the challenges that communities and the country at large face, including poverty and unemployment. Seriti developed the programme to create a pipeline of supply chain ready businesses that can secure procurement opportunities both in and outside Seriti. 
 
In May 2024, the Seriti ESD Programme graduation ceremony took place at the Maccauvlei Training Centre where Dwala Mining was awarded Best Performance. Our Operations Director Ms. Nompilo Sindane accepted the award from Mr. Thabo Masike, Chief Corporate and Community Relations at Seriti and Mr Nyaniso Rapiya the Preferential Procurement and ESD Lead at Seriti. 
 
In her acceptance speech, Ms Sindane expressed her gratitude to Seriti for the opportunity for our organisation to participate I the programme, she relayed all of our highlights and learnings during the year and our excitement to work with the organisation as a supplier. 
Dwala Mining Graduates from the Glencore ESD Program
Dwala Mining participated and successfully graduated from the Glencore Enterprise and Supplier Development programme for the year 2024 ran in partnership with Regoapele Capital. 
 
The annual ESD program is designed to support emerging local emerging local businesses with core strategic planning, the use of strategic tools and understanding the tendering process to secure new business opportunities. In addition, the program also addresses critical gaps that local SMMEs must effectively run their business, as well as occupational health and safety business processes. 
 
Reflecting on her experience in the ESD programme, Our Operations Director, Ms. Nompilo Sindane commended Glencore for facilitating access to tools to essential tools and connections vital for industry entry and growth. At the graduation ceremony Ms Sindane remarked, “We joined the ESD program to acquire the essential tools and skills required to enter the mining sector. I must admit, the journey has not been easy, having been in the industry for over 10 years. However, with Glencore’s assistance, we obtained vital support and connections. The ESD program has facilitated exposure to other companies, enabling us to secure contracts and demonstrate our capabilities.”
 
Glencore extended congratulations to the graduates for their dedication and stated looking forward to continuing its support to the companies.
